What is Piles?
Piles or hemorrhoids are a very common problem nowadays. The veins in the rectal and anal area swell and become engorged with blood. The swollen veins stretch the surrounding tissues, leading to the formation of lumps or masses known as piles or hemorrhoids. There are mainly two types of piles are formed Internal and External Piles. External piles form around the anus and can be painful, itchy, and may bleed. Subdivided into bleeding and non-bleeding piles.
Ayurvedic understanding of Piles:
In Ayurveda, piles are called Arsha. They are caused by an unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle, leading to the impairment of all three doshas. The vitiation of doshas results in Mandagni (weak digestive fire) and the vitiation of Apana Vayu, causing stagnation of Mala (waste) in the Gudavali (anal column). Prolonged contact with Mala stimulates the development of Arsha (piles). Arsha can be divided into two types: Shushkarsh (dry piles) and Sravi Arsh (exudating piles).
